STYLE SETTER: VIVIAN WISE

Benefitting Texas Legacy Foundation

Vivian Wise is a pragmatic creative, possessing in equal parts a flair for artistic expression as well as a head for business. Raised in El Paso, Vivian’s family moved to Houston in 1996; Vivian began calling the Bayou City home after graduating the University of Colorado in Boulder. She brought the high-end retail store she had purchased in Boulder—Velvet Slipper—back to the Lone Star State. The luxe shoe emporium was an expression of Vivian’s passion for fashion. When Vivian closed the doors, she formed Vivian Wise Productions, proffering to share her knack for creating unique experiential events long before they became a trend.

In 2015, Ms. Wise launched Heart of Fashion with a three-night runway event created to merge art, fashion and philanthropy. Unbeknownst to Vivian, the respiratory infection she was struggling to shake was an early sign of a life-changing diagnosis: Vivian was found to have multiple autoimmune disorders, including lupus, sweet syndrome and pyoderma gangrenosum. The latter are rare connective tissue conditions that ultimately inspired her to form Texas Legacy Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) to help raise funds for underserved charities as well as foundations that work on behalf of “orphan diseases” not unlike her own.

While learning to manage these disorders and cope with her “new normal,” Vivian changed some of the long-term plans for Heart of Fashion but couldn’t stop herself from thinking of a new enterprise. While homebound for 200 days, and unable to attend any fashion shows, Wise conceived of a retail fashion app is slated to be used during Fashion X Houston.

Since 2014, Vivian Wise has devoted her time, effort and resources to many organizations, including Bering Omega Community Services, The Birthday Party Project, Bo’s Place, Houston Community College Foundation, Stages Theatre and The Menil Foundation, to name a few. She has been honored by Lupus Foundation of America, National Arthritis Foundation and Fresh Arts, and she was named a 2017 ABC-13 Woman of Distinction for her charitable contributions in and around Houston.

STYLE SETTER: LORI RAIJMAN

Benefitting The Arts of Healing

Lori Raijman has spent her career dedicated to giving others a voice through art. As a public school teacher of 24 years, Lori watched as art became the tool for her at-risk students to express their hopes, personalities, and realities.

After retiring from teaching, she began working as an art manager for her “physician by day, painter by night” husband, Isaac Raijman. Lori again noticed how art built a bridge between him, his patients, and colleagues and founded The Arts of Healing, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that blends the worlds of art and medicine.

Today The Arts of Healing’s annual art show is a one-night convergence of art and medicine. Scalpels, stethoscopes, and lab coats are put away as physicians of the Texas Medical Center show their artistic side all in the name of charities related to the medical fields in which they practice, deepening the connection to one another in the process.

As a mother, grandmother, educator, and now philanthropist, Lori has made connecting communities and their respective causes through art, an art form in itself.
